Empirical and Molecular Formula

The empirical formula of a compound is the simplest whole-number ratio of atoms of each element in the compound. It does not necessarily represent the actual number of atoms in a molecule but gives the most reduced form.

The molecular formula of a compound shows the actual number of atoms of each element in a molecule. It is either the same as or a multiple of the empirical formula.
