Lesson 4.1 Stoichiometry

Stoichiometry

Stoichiometry is the branch of chemistry that deals with the quantitative relationships between reactants and products in a chemical reaction. It allows chemists to determine how much of a substance is needed or produced based on a balanced chemical equation.

Key Concepts:

Mole Ratios – The ratio of reactants and products, derived from the balanced equation.
Mass-to-Mass Calculations – Using molar mass and mole ratios to find the required mass of reactants or products.
Limiting Reactant – The reactant that runs out first, limiting the amount of product formed.
Theoretical Yield – The maximum amount of product expected based on calculations.
Percent Yield – The actual yield compared to the theoretical yield, expressed as a percentage.
